Banqueting House

What you need to know

Banqueting House on Whitehall is arguably one of the most impressive, grand and exclusive venues to host an event. Having been originally built as a banqueting house for King James I, royalty have celebrated here since 1622 and its design, influenced by 16th Century classical Roman architecture, is sure to leave guests astounded. The Main Hall is a remarkable space to host events - dinners for 380 people or drinks receptions for 500 are among the most popular evenings to hold here and the star of the show is undoubtedly the awe-inspiring work by Peter Paul Rubens. Installed in 1636, the acclaimed artist painted the most incredible work on the ceiling, designed to celebrate James’ life. It’s amazing that it’s survived all these years and provides an unforgettable setting for events. The space, surrounded by grand columns and ornate chandeliers, comes to life with lighting and production, making it even more beautiful than before. Before guests make their way to The Main Hall, The Undercroft works perfectly as a drinks reception area. This subterranean, vaulted space has a capacity of 380 people and provides a historic location to kick the evening off – it was once used by Stuart kings to escape public life and was even where King Charles II used to gamble. Alternatively, for smaller events, it works equally well as an atmospheric space for dinners for up to 120.
