London Design Festival 2020 returned this week to a variety of venues and institutes across the city and if you’re a design fanatic like us then you absolutely need to get involved! The festival promotes London as the design capital of the world and as the gateway to the international creative community and to celebrate, we thought we’d share an insight into the best design-led event venues taking pride of place in our beloved capital.
Originally built as a Tudor palace, Somerset House attracts millions of visitors each year and it’s clear to see why – this impressive Neo-Classical building really is remarkable. Stepping through its arched entrance and into The Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court is a sight to behold with the inner courtyard surrounded by the wings of the extensive building. From the light and bright Portico Rooms to the vaulted arches of the Embankment Galleries, there’s a plethora of interesting spaces. And we can’t possibly forget the intriguing Lightwells & Deadhouse; the venues most atmospheric space which lies hidden from the public gaze, one level below the famous fountains.
Renowned architect Zaha Hadid worked her magic on the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, bringing life to the former 1805 gunpowder store, whilst the Grade II listed Serpentine Gallery was established back in the 1970’s. Incorporating art, design and architecture across both galleries, the venue is full of atmosphere and culture, not forgetting the iconic Serpentine Pavilion; the venues annual architecture commission providing a global platform for experimental projects which is renewed annually – perfect if you’re seeking some design inspo.
Landing Forty Two
Situated in “The Cheesegrater” building amongst the hustle and bustle of the city is the highest dedicated event space in London. Its high-speed lifts deliver you to the venue in just over 30 seconds and provide guests with exquisite panoramic views across the twinkling lights of the city as well as floor to ceiling windows and quirky, exposed ceilings. Design fanatics are sure to love this iconic venue, from entering the building underneath its colossal foundations, to the super quick, glass fronted lifts and the unforgettable views once on the 42nd floor.
Ingenious, cosy and vibrant, the design of this brand new hotel perfectly located a stone’s throw away from Oxford Circus is everything to be excited about. Developed around the ideas that inspire a child to build a treehouse, the aptly named Treehouse Hotel is one of the most nostalgic places to walk into, with a touch of chic and stylish interiors to step it up a notch. And as if that’s not enough, stunning foliage alongside vintage furniture in The Nest rooftop bar with spectacular landscape views are sure to impress.
We couldn’t celebrate London Design Festival without mentioning the world’s leading museum devoted to design now, could we? The cultural landmark located on High Street Kensington has been exquisitely composed, with some of the venue’s original features still intact including the fascinating paraboloid roof, making it a real post war architectural beauty. With a whole host of exhibitions and event spaces, be sure to hold your next event here if you’re looking to inspire and impress your guests.
